Retrofitting DAB+: What you need to know

DAB+ is the new, digital Swiss radio standard and will replace the current FM broadcasting from 2023.

DAB+ is the new, digital Swiss radio standard and will replace the current FM broadcasting from 2023. The switchover of radio stations to "Digital Audio Broadcasting" has long since begun and already over 90% of all new cars sold have DAB+ reception capability. But owners of older vehicles need not worry either: DAB+ can be retrofitted without any problems. Yourwheels explains what you need to know about retrofitting DAB+.

What are the advantages of DAB+?

DAB+ transmits signals digitally and in encrypted form - and thus ensures interference-free radio reception without manual frequency changes. In addition to improved sound quality, DAB+ also offers an increased variety of programs and the possibility of transmitting text and images via additional services, for example. This means that, in addition to radio reception, music tracks, traffic information and news can also be conveniently displayed in the car via DAB+.

Where can I retrofit DAB+?

The easiest way to upgrade to DAB+ is to go to your local garage. This service is now offered by practically all Swiss garages, both official brand representatives and independent workshops and partners of garage concepts such as Autofit. Ask your preferred garage about the possibilities of retrofitting DAB+, or find a competent garage near you directly via yourwheels.

What are the options for retrofitting DAB+?

There are various options for retrofitting DAB+ in your car. It is important to weigh up the various advantages and disadvantages:

  • Replacement radio for DAB+ reception
In most vehicles, it is possible to completely replace the existing FM radio with a DAB+ radio. This variant provides the best sound and offers optimal operability, but it certainly has its price.

  • Adapter for the reception of DAB+
Adapters receive the digital signals via an additional antenna and transmit them to the vehicle - either as a converted signal that is passed on to the old car radio, or via USB/AUX connection. Both variants are relatively inexpensive, but reception via USB/AUX adapter offers better sound quality.

How much does it cost to retrofit DAB+ for my car?

If you equip your vehicle for DAB+ reception with a simple adapter, the costs are manageable. Prices for devices including antenna and power cable start at around 150 Swiss francs, plus the costs for installation. It will be considerably more expensive if you replace the entire radio set. This option is therefore only recommended if you want to keep the vehicle for a long time.

Can I retrofit DAB+ myself?

Retrofitting DAB+ yourself is possible, but not recommended. The installation of an adapter with antenna and power supply or an entire radio requires experience, expertise and special tools. The specialist in the garage ensures that the cables are neatly laid, the antenna works properly and the electrics are also securely installed.
